Numeracy Resources - Curriculum for Excellence (Scotland)
This rich bank of Numeracy resources has been created and extensively trialled by teachers working with real classes within their own classroom environments. They are aimed at supporting the development of numeracy at the Early, First, and Second stages described in the Curriculum for Excellence.
A group of experienced Scottish teachers in Dumfries and Galloway* have carefully mapped the resurces to the Mathematics Experiences and Outcomes of the Curriculum for Excellence. The mapping refers to the appropriate Stage at which a resouce can be used, the aspect of mathematics related to the activity and, critically, the relevant "I can..." statement of achievement for the participating child.
The activities can obviously be used to develop discrete mathematical skills within the context of mathematics but must always be seen against the background of the Curriculum for Excellence Principles and Practice guidance which enables and encourages the responsibility of teachers in all curricular areas to take the opportunity to develop numeracy.
Many of these activities can be used comfortably within curricular areas other than mathematics.
One of the principles behind the creation of the materials is that, initially, teachers would simply use the materials exactly as they are; they would adopt them. Once more familiar with the materials teachers might choose to adapt some of them to match the needs of their children even more closely. Further on still, as understanding of how the resources were created grows, teachers will increasingly want to innovate, creating new materials for themselves appropriate to their own unique school setting.
These resources include a wide range of interactive experiences which can be deployed at individual, group or class level and use the appropriate tools within Textease Studio CT for the purpose. All lend themselves to use on an interactive whiteboard.
